Car Boot Sale and random donations

Gemma at work has kindly arranged to hold a car boot sale with proceeds to the Trek.  I thought I'd search out a few things from the garage to donate and even foolishly offered the garage as storage for anything left over.  The trouble is I couldn't even get in the garage to search it is that full of clutter!  On a positive note I'm now seeing donations on the www.justgiving.com/alan-conway site from people I either don't know or have forgotten.  Truly amazing.  I think they're coming from people responding to you guys 'sharing' the links on Facebook but I'm not sure?  Anyway thank you!

Day 2 Training - around Gribben Head, near Fowey - 3 miles

Day 2 Training - around Gribben Head, near Fowey - 3 miles

A bit of light training today but as it was so gorgeous I didn't mind.  For those of you who don't know 'The Gribben' is near Menabilly.  Menabilly is an Elizabethan house on the south coast of Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, on the Rashleigh Estate, seat of the Rashleigh family. Menabilly is situated on the Gribben peninsula about 2 miles (3.2 km) west of Fowey.[1The house was the inspiration, along with Milton Hall, Cambridgeshire, for "Manderley", the house in du Maurier's novel Rebecca (1938). Like Menabilly, the fictional Manderley was hidden in woods and could not be seen from the shore.

The whole area was magical today.  Bathed in sunlight and every bit as special as the Himalayas (and a bit warmer!).  I wish Lisa had been with me.  So a leisurely 1hr 45 mins around to Polkerris and back to the car.  No buses involved today thank you very much...ps thanks to Linzi for looking after Oscar. x

Finally, I'm enormously grateful to everyone who have already donated to my trek in aid of Cornwall Hospice Care.  The fund stands at over £1100 already - 1/3 of my minimum target!!

Interesting fact:

Gribben Day Mark
Gribben Head, Fowey, Cornwal
date 1832
era Georgian | category Lighthouse | OS grid reference SX097498
ICE reference number HEW 1804
Gribben Day Mark is an imposing stone tower on Gribben Head south west of Fowey. It serves as a daylight warning marker to shipping — a kind of unlit unmanned lighthouse.
The present structure was built in 1832 on the headland, some 2km from the town. Its purpose is to guide mariners into the deep water harbour there. Its predecessor had been struck by lightning.
The tower is 25.6m high and square in section. It has red and white horizontal bands painted on its sides and sits some 76m above sea level. There is a turret at the top.
The Gribben Day Mark is owned now by the National Trust and the site is open to the public. On some summer Sundays, the tower is open for visits to the turret — if a flag is flying, it's open.

Thought for the day:

There's suffering in the world in order to show how much beauty there is too.  You could not have one without the other...

Day 1 training - Boscastle-Tintagel

 Boscastle
 Rocky Valley
Tintagel - squint hard to see the Castle!

Day 1 Training - Boscastle to Tintagel - 5 miles (13380 steps)

'The walking is not too strenuous' said the book.  Nice little opener for someone in my state of fitness.  Didn't reckon without the new boots however....2 to 2hrs 30 mins.  Hmmm. 2hrs 45 mins later I summonsed up my last bit of energy and ran (yes ran) after the Western Greyhound bus disappearing around the corner back towards Boscastle.  Luckily it stopped and 7 minutes (!!) later I was back at the car realising the fundraising wasn't the hardest part of this trip - it will be the walking....

Interesting fact

The visible horizon is a different distance away for everyone according to your age, health etc.  For me it was 28 miles on this walk as I could see Lundy Island (admittedly from the top of a cliff).
The approximate distance to the horizon from an observer close to the Earth's surface is given by[5]
d \approx 3.570\sqrt{h} \,,
where d is in kilometres and h is height above sea level in metres. So all you clever clogs.  Work out how high I was to see Lundy so clearly!

Thought for the day:

We experience suffering to understand and realise our true strength.  Pain leads us to improve our quality of life and open to love.

Inaugral meeting

I welcomed  my core Fundraising committee to our inaugral meeting today.  Welcome - Liz, Tracey, Becs, Leanne, Fran, Linzi, Vicky and Bec (apologies from Helen - who has been volunteered for an event in her absence so let that be a warning!)  I think they were a bit shocked by my OCD organisational fixations (well those that don't work with me anyway..agendas, action plans?!  Heaven help us.  I tried (unsccessfully) to allocate a number of key roles but succeeded in getting volunteers to take on a number of exciting events - still struggling to organise ferret racing and worm charming - but give me time...It is clear that there is a tremendous appetite to hit and exceed the target of £3395 so I'm excited and reassured.  1st event is a cake sale at HMRC - usually a winner and you've already raised over £500 in less than a week.  Tremendous effort and thank you everyone.  Alan

Hi there

I'm new to all this so bear with me but thought you might like to share the excitement / worry of preparing for this trip in a blog.  The most important thing is to raise lots of dosh so I make no apology for focussing on fundraising.  Hopefully you can use this blog, or pm me those of you that are Facebook fans, to let me know of any ideas that might help!.  I'm very excited about the trip as well as hopefully making lots of money for the two Hospices, Mt Edgcumbe and St Julia's.  I also need to get fit and propose to walk sections of the Cornish Coastal path as part of my training effort, probably each Saturday.  I'd welcome any company though, never one to miss an opportunity, I might ask the 'lucky person' to conribute towards the fuel costs by donating to the appeal....ha ha......Alan
